A TSUNAMI WARNING CARIBE WAVE EXERCISE
The Barbados Meteorological Services (BMS) is advising the public that there is an imminent threat of a tsunami.
THERE IS CONFIRMATION THAT A DESTRUCTIVE TSUNAMI IS UNDERWAY.
Estimated time of arrival pf 1st wave: 1238 PM local time
Tsunami wave heights ranging from 0.3 to 1 meter above tide level
EXERCISE...EXERCISE...EXERCISE...POTENTIAL IMPACTS:-
These tsunami waves are likely to produce strong currents in harbor, be dangerous to swimmers in the water and be hazardous to persons along inland waterways.
- Expect delays on traffic routes from the warning areas towards the safe zones.
- Expect disruptions to telecommunication services due to high user demand.
- Expect service interruptions/abrupt cancellations at hospitals, seaports, fire stations, police stations and hotels within the warning area.
- Tsunami waves are multiple waves which can range in time from 5 mins to 1 hour between wave events and can persist for many hours.
An earthquake has occurred with the following preliminary parameters reported by the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center
Magnitude: - 8.7 Orgin Time: - 11 am local time Coordinates: - 19.3 N 66.5W
Depth: - 20km or 12 miles Location: - Puerto Rico region
A Tsunami Warning is the highest level of alert (RED). A Tsunami warning is issued when:
1. There is an imminent threat of a Tsunami from a large undersea earthquake or
2. Following confirmation that a potentially destructive Tsunami is underway.
The warning advises that appropriate actions be taken in response to the Tsunami threat. This warning is based on confirmation from the PTWC that a Tsunami is on the way. Warnings are updated at least hourly or as conditions warrant.
