WEATHER INFORMATION STATEMENT # 5 FOR BARBADOS ON THE TROPICAL WAVE OF INTEREST
Effective
04:55:04 2024-06-28
Expires
17:00:00 2024-06-28
Description
The Barbados Meteorological Services (BMS) continues to closely monitor a tropical wave located in the Eastern Atlantic along 38W or 1470 miles/2360 km east of Barbados, at 5 am, today Friday 28th June 2024.
THERE ARE CURRENTLY NO WATCHES OR WARNINGS IN EFFECT FOR BARBADOS.
However, by Saturday, a tropical storm watch as well as marine advisories may be issued.
Potential Impacts
The tropical wave is likely to develop into a tropical depression/storm over the next day or two and is expected to affect Barbados late Sunday night 30th June into Monday 1st July 2024. As a result, there is a possibility of flash flooding and storm-force winds impacting the island during that time. Additionally, sea conditions may become hazardous as early as Sunday and a Small Craft Warning and High Surf warning may be issued for Barbados during the weekend.
What you should do
The public is encouraged to monitor the BMS, DEM, and GIS websites, their respective social media pages, and the local media networks for further updates over the coming days.
Discussion
The tropical wave and associated area of low-pressure are currently showing signs of organization despite the periodic entrainment of dry air. The wave is expected to move westward at 15 to 20 mph over the next few days. Numerical weather models continue to track the center of the system just south of Barbados early on Monday 1st July, 2024.
Due to the size of the system, there is some uncertainty in the forecast intensity. However, environmental conditions appear conducive for additional developement and a tropical depression or tropical storm could form to the east of Barbados over the next day or two.
